While Natives of the northeast would have made use of tree barks in the winter, the cold and frozen landscape leaves little for the modern forager. The careful study of tree barks, shrubs, herbaceous remains, and other such winter details can prepare us for the growing season. Where is the Basswood? The Burdock, Evening Primrose, and Thistle? Where is the Pokeweed, Milkweed, and others?
Don't let your botany brain atrophy in the winter! Hit the books and look closely at the buds. Take advantage of the little daylight we have to enjoy the vast and wonderful world.
