Martial arts is largely about self-improvement. "You're greatest enemy is yourself" is a common adage. This reflects the constant process of transforming food into chi. Just as the body constantly produces life-force through the absorption of life-force from external sources - food, sun, air, etc., balance is constantly re-created each moment. This is health. Because this is our nature as living human beings, it is a good thing to constantly improve (train) ourselves.
