According to McCarthy's translation of the Bubishi, Blupleurum, Platycodon, Ophiopogon, Pinellia, Rehmannia, Jujube, and Peach seed are in the formula for the Gall Bladder...
Teasel, Achyranthes, (Chinese) Ligusticum, Dong Quai, Rehmannia, high quality Garlic Chives, and "Berberis lycium (Solanaceae)", which could refer to Barberry or Lycii (Gogi), are in the formula for the Liver. Certainly Barberry is a liver herb and would give this formula a strong bitter property. It is in Berberidaceae, however - the Barberry Family. Lycium barbarum is a source of Gogi berries and is in Solanaceae - the Nightshade Family.
