Anise  Pimpinella anisum  Warming aromatic for digestion & as anti-rheumatic.

Cardomom  Elettaria cardamomum  Aromatic herb used for mucus & with sweets.

Cayenne  Capsicum frutescens  Circulatory stimulant, primary in Thomsonian medicine.

Chive  Allium schoenoprasum   Best fresh as a diaphoretic.

Cilantro  Coriandrum sativum  Cilantro for heavy metal detox.  Coriander as digestant.

Cinnamon  Cinnamomum spp.  Warms the body & promotes circulation.

Clove  Syzgium aromaticum  Warming aromatic.  Oil specific for toothache.

Cumin  Cuminum cyminum  A bitter aromatic used to promote digestion.

Fennel  Foeniculum vulgare  Promotes digestion & clears mucus.

Fenugreek  Trigonella foenum-graecum  For blood sugar, digestion, & milk production.

Garlic  Allium sativum  Anti-microbial, expectorant, & healthy for heart & circulation.

Garlic Mustard  Sisymbrium alliaria  Has properties similar to Garlic & Mustard.

Ginger  Zinfiber officinalis  “If Ginger can’t cure, than nothing can.”

Gogi  Lycium chinense  Used for blood & as tonic.

Holy Basil  Ocimum sanctum  Revered in spiritual traditions.  Clears mucus.

Horseradish  Amoracia lapathifolia  Used to clear congestion.

Jujube Date  Ziziphus jujuba  Nourishes blood & chi, reducing stress & anxiety.

Kudzu  Pueraria montana  Thickener good at onset of fevers & for digestion.     

Lavender  Lavandula spp.  Popular medicinal can be used in culinary.

Lovage  Ligusticum levisticum  Mostly used fresh from garden for digestive benefits. 

Marjoram Origanum marjorana  Aromatic digestant.

Marshmallow  Althea officinalis  Thickener used to nourish fluids.

Mesquite Prosopis spp.  Pods used for flavor, digestion, and as an antimicrobial.

Morel Morchella spp.  Fungal delicacy often dried for storage and used to reduce mucus.

Mustard  Brassica spp.  Used in plasters for pain and congestion. Clears mucus. 

Nutmeg  Myristica fragrans  A primary carminative of the spice rack.

Orange Peel Citrus spp.  Used in many Chinese herbal formulas for digestion and more.

Oregano  Oreganum vulgare  Dried or fresh herb for mucus.  Essential oil very strong.

Poor Man’s Pepper  Lepidium virginicum  A wild seasoning like Shepherd’s Purse.

Ramp  Allium tricoccum  “Wild Leek” Medicinal uses similar to Garlic & Onion.

Rosemary  Rosmarinus officinale  Many medicinal uses, such as for circulation. 

Safflower  Carthamus tinctorius  “Poor-Man’s-Saffron” for blood flow, etc.

Saffron  Crocus sativus  This “sattvic” (pure) herb is used to promote circulation.

Sage  Salvia officinalis  Prepared as tea for lungs & as anti-diaphoretic.

Sassafras  Sassafras albidum  Original seasoning and thickener for Gumbo, Sassafras can be used for its mucilaginous  and aromatic properties and as a blood cleanser.

Schisandra (“Five Flavor Fruit”)  Schisandra chinensis  Chinese herb with many uses.

Shepherd’s Purse Capsella bursa-pastoris  Used for mucus & to stop bleeding.

Shiitake  Lentinula edodes  Used in soup to boost immune system.

Slippery Elm  Ulmus fulva  Powder can be added to breakfast cereal & other foods.

Spearmint  Mentha spicata  Used like Peppermint.

Spicebush Lindera benzoin  Formerly replaced Allspice.  Great antimicrobial.

Spilanthes  Spilanthes spp.  A novel culinary herb, best known as an antimicrobial.

Star Anise  Illicium verum  Another great antimicrobial.

Sumac Rhus spp.  Sour seasoning with astringent properties.

Thyme  Thymus vulgaris  One of the best for the lungs.

Turmeric  Curcuma longa  “So good for so many things.”

Umeboshi  Prunus mume  Pickled plum with many medicinal uses. 

Watercress  Rorippa nasturtium-aquatica  Pungent ingredient disperses mucus.

Wild Ginger  Asarum canadensis  Similar properties to Ginger.

Wood Ear  Auricularia auricula  Thins blood & for sore throat.  In Hot-and-Sour Soup.
