Multiflora Rose, one of the most invasive plants (particularly of old meadows), is listed in The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica. It is listed in the "Inferior Class", which is of medicinals that are used to treat specific disease but should not be taken long term or in large doses. (The three categories of herbs" Superior, Inferior, and Poisonous is one of the most important concepts of Chinese herbal medicine.) The book refers to the seed (Semen Rosae Multiflorae) being used; however, the translator, Yang Shou-zhong, cites that the seed is used for thorns in the flesh and fish bones in the throat and that he believes the indications listed in the book are actually for the root of the plant. None-the-less, it is described as being sour and warm; treating abscesses, sores, flesh binding, sprained sinews, putrifying sores, heat, and intractable genital erosion; and that it disinhibits the joints.
