Introduction to Herbal Medicine
Paid in full, the course is $80. For each class individually, the cost is $25 each.
Class Descriptions:
Class One: Yin/Yang Theory
This class will introduce yin/yang theory and explain some of its many facets in Chinese medicine. We will explain the famous yin/yang symbol as well as several of the fundamental theories used in general and specifically in Chinese medicine. Yin and yang properties of foods and herbs will be discussed.
Class Two: Five Element Theory
This class will expand on yin/yang theory to explain five element theory, which is central to understanding the organs and body systems in the context of Chinese medicine. Many of the five element correspondences will be discussed, especially those relating to health, diagnosis, herbs, and foods.
Class Three: Diagnosis
This class will explain how yin/yang balance and the interplay of the five elements are assessed in the body. The four pillars of Chinese medicine diagnosis will be introduced. They are inquiry, listening, touch assessment, and visual diagnosis. Within this four categories are pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, facial diagnosis, abdominal diagnosis, and more. All of which will be introduced.
Class Four: Materia Medica
This class will explain the materia medica of Chinese herbal medicine. The categories of herbs have been formed through the ages. The theories and diagnosis methods discussed in the previous classes guide the herbalist to certain categories of the materia medica as well as to particular herbs within the categories. Each group will be introduced and a number of herbs will be discussed.

Herbs for Pain Spring Version
TBA
Learn about herbs (and some additional "alternative" therapies) for treatment of pain and conditions that cause pain. Pain is a common concern and part of everyday life for many people. Especially considering our present day opioid epidemic, herbs that treat pain is an increasingly important subject. This class will discuss various herbs, herbal blends, topical treatments, and details about dosage and preparations.
Since I have already offer this class at Worker Bee and since spring is in the air, this Herbs for Pain class will focus on the liver. In Chinese medicine the liver is very involved with the process of pain, beyond direct connection in modern physiology (such as with gall bladder issues). Since the liver regulates the flow of qi in the body (chi / ki / vital energy) and since the principle in Chinese medicine is that pain results from the stagnation of qi, the liver is involved in almost all types of pain. Special attention to liver health is called for especially with gall bladder issues, headaches, connective tissue disorders, and more.

Chinese Herbal Medicine: Herbs & Formulae
TBA
Worker Bee Community Acupuncture
This class will introduce the Chinese herbal medicine materia medica ("materials of medicine"), the herbs and their classification according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, and some major Chinese herbal formulae. Often, it is ideal to customize a formula according to each individual and their individual case at the time. Likewise, standard formulae are often adjusted in consideration of an individual's constitution or symptoms. However, Chinese herbal medicine is largely built upon a strong tradition of classic formulae... sometimes discovered in ancient times, and proven through generations. This class will look at some important herbal ingredients, the major classification groups of the Chinese herbal medicine materia medica, and a handful of classic formulae.
Suggested $20 donation.

CURRENT MOON
Getting there: Since there is no address, one can identify the general location as near the intersection of Taras Shevchenko Road with White Road. The drive (pictured) is within view of this intersection, on White Road. From Route 97, take High Road (which is located across from the Pond Eddy bridge), then the first right onto White Road.
The driveway is just about 2 miles from Route 97, on the right after passing Taras Shevchenko Road. Alternatively, a few miles south on 97 is Route 31 (near the Mongaup River and Delaware River convergence, across from the Park Service access area), or Upper Mongaup Road. White Road is on the left a few miles from 97. From Route 41 (High Road, which turns into 42/Forestburg Road in Glen Spey) in Glen Spey, make a left onto Taras Shevchenko Road and then at the end make a left onto White Road. |
